If you’re interested in owning houseplants but are not sure where to start, this post will list some of the best indoor houseplants for beginners!
Whether you are limited on space, light, time, or have curious cats, there are several great houseplant options to fit your need!
Most importantly, it would be recommended to check out your local greenhouses first to see what options and recommendations they might have for your need.
There are online vendors too, such as The Sill, Bloomscape, HomeDepot, and even Amazon has live plants!
Lastly, you do NOT need to have any gardening experience to start! Anyone can absolutely grow their own green thumb 🙂
The Best Indoor Houseplants With Low Light

There are numerous great options for indoor houseplants for beginners that require low light! Some are even great air purifiers too removing toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene from the air!
One of my personal favorites is the snake plant (AKA Dracaena Trifasciata, or Mother-In-Law’s Tongue). Snake plants are hardy succulents that require very little light or maintenance!
You can also easily divide these every few years! (See below how I divide my snake plants) Likewise, learning how to propagate plants is another rewarding and inexpensive option to extend the life and collection of your plants! An example of a plant that is very easy to propagate is a pothos!
*Seen here, one of the snake plants I divided and repotted this past weekend! Very easy to divide!

- Snake Plant (AKA Mother-In-Law’s Tongue)
- Spider Plant
- Peperomia
- Devils Ivy (AKA Pothos)
- Chinese Evergreen
- Heart-Leaf Philodendron
- Bromeliads
- Silver Pothos
- Diffenbachia
- Christmas Cactus
- Dwarf Umbrella Plant
The Best Indoor Houseplants With Low Maintenance

Perhaps you are looking to get an indoor houseplant, but are looking for very low maintenance. If watering your plants routinely is not feasible, there are some plants who can go weeks without water!
There are many hardy plants who require very little care and attention, and still thrive and look beautiful! Succulents are a great, easy, example of this. Plus they are easy to propagate as well.
Here are some great low maintenance indoor houseplants:
- Wax Plant
- Kimberly Queen Fern
- ZZ Plant
- Ponytail Palm
- Silver Satin
- Cast Iron Plant
- Weeping Fig
- Succulents (Aloe Vera, Agave, Stonecrop Sedum, Hens and Chicks)

What Houseplants Are Non-Toxic To Cats

Lastly, if you’re interested in finding the best indoor houseplants but are hesitant because you have a curious feline or two, there are some wonderful non-toxic options to choose from!
Additionally, it is recommend regardless if plants are listed as non-toxic, it is a great idea to still have your plants in a location that is difficult for your feline or pup to get to. Perhaps on a shelf or a windowsill out of reach!
One of my favorite pet safe plants are orchids! They are strikingly beautiful and require very little maintenance, and when they bloom it is absolutely stunning!
Additionally, an important note is that this is not a complete list (which is so exciting, because the list is long). There are many, many more non-toxic plants you can take care of with pups or cats in your home!
Here are a few non-toxic houseplants to choose from to help you start:
- Calthea
- Spider Plant (Super easy to propagate)
- African Violet
- Boston Fern
- Orchid (endless varieties and colors!)
- Baby Tears
- Friendship Plant
- Garden herbs (basil, rosemary, thyme) (YUM!)
- Date Palm
- Prayer Plant

Hopefully after reading this blog post you feel more empowered to begin your own indoor houseplant journey! There are certainly many myths that you need full direct sun in order to keep plants happy, or that all plants are toxic to cats..both untrue!
Don’t be afraid to give it a whirl and start growing your indoor houseplant collection today!
What plants are you excited to try?!
Best of luck in your indoor houseplant journey 🙂
