Growing ranunculus from start to finish isn’t as hard as you might think! They make beautiful flowers for cut arrangements and have a long lasting vase life. With a few simple steps, you too can grow and harvest these beautiful flowers.
How To Get Started Growing Ranunculus
How do you begin growing ranunculus??
In my previous posts check out how to go about pre-sprouting and planting your ranunculus!
*If you live in a USDA garden zone below 7, you will need to go about pre-sprouting your ranunculus as well ensuring you plant them only when the danger of frost has passed as ranunculus are not winter hardy. Zones 7 or above can get away with leaving ranunculus in the ground! Lucky!!
Can You Grow Ranunculus in Pots?
Absolutely!
Growing ranunculus in containers is a great option if you are limited on space, or simply love the look of containers! Follow the above instructions, except just plant in a container.
How To Harvest Ranunculus Flowers
You’ve patiently waited for them to grow and form buds..now what? Well, here’s what you need to do next when it’s time to harvest ranunculus.
- Wait until your buds begin to form into the “marshmallow” stage. This is where they are soft, squishy and not yet open.
- Trim at the base of the stem and be sure to make an additional clean cut prior to placing into water for longer vase life.
- Use flower food to extend vase life even further (although not required!)
- It’s that easy!! Now time to enjoy 🙂 And once the flowers have stopped blooming (typically after 4-6 weeks) you can dig up the bulbs (corms) to save for next year!
