I live in arguably one of the best states in the country to go camping, Maine. I embarrassingly admit it has been around eight years since I have last been. I’m not talking about glamping or driving an RV out to a campground either. I’m talking about getting your hands dirty, roll up your sleeves and pitching a tent kind of camping.

Summer Camping In Maine
Recently a few of my girlfriends and I had been brainstorming of ways we could safely get together for an all girls getaway and came up with camping. We landed on choosing a campground called Megunticook Campground by the Sea, near Rockport in Maine.
It was by the coast and only a few hours ride from where we all live. All four of us had been feeling quite on edge and in need of some serious disconnecting to the outside world and reconnecting to the ‘real’ world.
For a little context, I grew up camping and sailing almost every weekend in the summer, and when I look back now I think of how much of a privilege that was to be able to do so. Now, I’m hoping to make an effort to disconnect more and more.

There is just something so rejuvenating about unplugging. I waited too long and am encouraging others to get out there if you have been feeling a little lost or overwhelmed too.
10 Reasons Why You Should Go Camping This Year!
- There is nothing like looking through the sheer screen of your tent to see the stars as you fall asleep at night and then waking up at 5am to watch the sunrise over the ocean.
- Campfire roasted s’mores. There’s not a whole lot more I need to add to this, they will change your life.
- Pitching a tent feels empowering. You are building your home for the night and as simplistic as it sounds, it honestly makes your soul just plain happy.
- Learning how to build and tend to a fire.
- The road trip to and from the campsite are just an added bonus. You get to blast music and maybe get lost.
- Stopping off at a little country store to pick up little odds and ends, and meeting some of the locals.
- Watching for wildlife and witnessing something you’ve never seen before.
- Not using any electronics! Usually you have no cell service, so this one is easy.
- Discovering a lake or swimming hole to float your cares away in.
- Simply living and breathing in nature. There’s such a different smell to the ocean. You can smell and feel the salt in the air, and it is mesmerizing. Additionally, the woods also have their own unique earthy smell.

Unplugging And Going Back To Basics
Sometimes all it takes is to dial life back down to the simplest ways of living. You’ll often find you begin to feel something either you have never felt before or haven’t felt in a very long time. So the next time you feel on edge and in need of a reset, find a campground near you or come to Maine!

If you don’t have your own gear you can often rent camp gear online with a quick google search like with Outdoors Geek, REI, Eddie Bauer or LLBean. Or simply reach out to your friends and see what they have and invite them along for the trip of a lifetime.
