This post is all about beautiful climbing roses and vines to help make your garden pop!
One of my all time favorite vertical climbers are roses! Two years ago I planted my first climbing roses (as bare root roses-meaning no foliage) and this summer was their first year of growth! Boy did they climb, over 24 inches!
Here is a quick list of beautiful vines and climbing roses that I hope you will want to add to your garden as well!
5 BEST CLIMBING VINES AND ROSES:
Beautiful climbing roses add a POP to any arbor!
1. CLIMBING ROSES
There are numerous types of climbing roses which can differ in how fast they grow, strength of their scent, how often they bloom and the zones in which they thrive.. to name a few! Seen above are David Austin ‘James Galaway’ climbing roses.
Do you have a climbing rose yet in your garden?
If interested in training your own roses, I recommend using a gentle velcro tape such as this one!

2. CLEMATIS
Pictured here is my ‘Pink Mink’ clematis. There’s an old adage for clematis, they like, “a hot head and cool feet“(meaning the vine and foliage should be in the sun, while the base of the plant should be shaded). They are beautiful plants and also prolific bloomers once they get going.
3. SWEET PEAS
Sweet peas are a triple threat. They smell incredible, come in a variety of gorgeous colors and you get to harvest peas. These plants would be a perfect companion to a trellis! These would also make fantastic cuttings with floral arrangements as your “spiller” plant and are very easy to grow!
4 Mini Pumpkins
All pumpkin vines are vigorous growers and can easily take over your garden, however with a mini pumpkin vine they are much easier to manage. Additionally, they can be easily grown on an arbor and the pollinators also LOVE this vine. Lastly, these are extremely fun to grow and kids love them!
5 GRAPEVINES
Grapevines are vigorous climbers that need plenty of space and a solid foundation to hold the weight. They can be grown in USDA zones 4-10, require annual pruning and are extremely hardy. With that said, they are absolutely beautiful and you can harvest from them to make your own wine!
A few more fantastic climbing vines worth mentioning:
- Wisteria
- Black Eyed Susan
- Trumpet Honeysuckle
- Virgina Creeper
- Love In A Puff
